The endless, pointless, unwinnable war in Afghanistan only ended because the endless, pointless, unwinnable war on COVID had begun.

If you ask me, the war in Afghanistan ended so that chaos and unrest could spread through the Middle East all the way to China. Fluctuations in oil prices will profit speculators in New York and London, while disruptions in supply caused by violence will distort supply lines that are already distorted by COVID.
Disturbances in the labor market will hurt the Chinese government particularly badly, which will probably set the drums of war to beating again, which in turn will make money flow from the treasury to the weapons manufacturers who just lost Afghan contracts.
Regular people will be the ones to suffer obviously. That seems to be the one constant on this planet.
