Never Attribute to Incompetency

This administration withdraws from Afghanistan leaving behind a bunch of American citizens, hundreds of collaborators, and a mountain of brand-new US weaponry and military equipment. Which the Taliban will use to slaughter the abandoned US citizens and collaborators. And then, maybe even invade Pakistan.

Then the US will have to send troops to Pakistan, and there will be a fresh round of this insanity.

Is that the goal? Is that why the withdrawal was done this way? To guarantee another wave of mass migration into Europe and a looming collapse of Pakistan? Obama’s mandate was to destabilize the Middle East and send a wave of migrants to Europe. Is Biden’s mandate to destabilize South Asia?

Folks, I’m starting to fear that we won a battle but lost the war. I think it’s the Obama gambit again. Opposing the war in Iraq because it was old, boring, and not that lucrative any more and supporting a much more promising new war.

I want to be wrong but when did these people ever do anything that didn’t promote neoliberalism?

    There’s at least one (I think more) revered Orthdox saint who predicted that China’s army would advance overland all the way to the Euphrates. Ever since reading that, I’ve idly wondered how on earth that would happen– didn’t seem logistically plausible. Now I see it– the glimmer of that possibility.

      I think that in the current situation that’s one of the better scenarios. Not that it’s good but the rest are worse. South Asia will belong either to China or ISIS.

        I’ve heard there are rare-earth mineral type resources waiting to be mined in Afghanistan. Bet China’s already scoping those out…

          Bingo! The rare earth minerals. Years ago I wondered why the heck the US was in Afghanistan. Russians had been thrown out 40 years ago. So I poked around on the stats for Afghanistan. Certain rare elements which are used in high tech products…. 😦

            That’s absolutely another part of it.

            People take these slogans about bringing democracy to Afghanistan seriously and then debate them like they are real. These are just empty words. Afghanistan was always about a very complicated geopolitical situation with pressures from such key nuclear players as China, Pakistan and Russia.

    Trump wanted to leave even earlier than Biden, so I doubt things would have been much different under a different administration. The important thing is we are finally out, and I’m hoping Biden doesn’t get flayed for making the right decision. He has made several dumb decisions, leaving Afghanistan is not one of them, regardless of how chaotic.

    I seriously doubt this will happen anywhere in the short to medium term. Afghanistan and Iraq are this generation’s Vietnam and that will leave long lasting scars. There is no way the US gets deeply involved anywhere in the middle east at least for the next decade.

      Pakistan has nuclear weapons. If it falls into the hands of unhinged fundamentalists of the ISIS-Taliban caliber, it’s the biggest global threat right now. Extinction level shit.

      I hope nobody here believes that the US was ever in Afghanistan to spread democracy. It was only to keep the nuclear Pakistan friendly. Pakistan is now in a more perilous situation than ever. Thanks to Mr Biden.

      By the way, Afghanistan is not Middle East. It’s South Asia. A completely different region and an entirely different culture. The Gulf countries despise Afghanis as savages because this is a completely different civilizational stage.

        Pakistan is now allied with China. It’s China’s problem now.

        Also, I don’t see how the Taliban taking Afghanistan is so bad for Pakistan, given that Pakistan sponsors the Taliban and are in bed with them.

          It’s absolutely true that Pakistan is looking at Taliban with friendly eyes. Which is why the US has had to bend itself over backwards to prevent Pakistan from going completely off the fundamentalist deep end. Pakistan is always 5 minutes away from turning into a fundamentalist state. I don’t think there is or has been anything in foreign policy for a while more important than finessing Pakistan.

          And then you guys voted for a dementia patient with no foreign policy team and a huge debt to China, so that was smart. But hey, at least he still manages to find his way from our of the bushes on the WH lawn.

            I don’t see how this is our problem anymore. Let China handle that. It’s literally their neighborhood.
            Being the world police has gotten us nowhere, and most likely just made things worse.

            That “dementia patient” had the balls to get us out of Afghanistan at great political risk; so in that regard I’m a very happy voter.
