The history of the nation-state begins with the United States. It is the first and the most successful nation-state in history. Today, as 246 years ago, people are willing to die for this imperfect yet wonderful form of statehood.

In Belarus we have to interpret everything that happens as a hint or indication that change is possible. For example, the president’s son appeared in public with his girlfriend dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. We know that the son’s mother was murdered by Lukashenka. Is the son hinting at a different future for Belarus after his father’s death? On the other hand, Lukashenka wouldn’t let his son appear in public without vetting his outfit. Does this mean Lukash is looking for a way out of the situation and sending covert signs to the West? We don’t know but we are going crazy about this blue-yellow outfit because that’s our only hope that anything will change.

I’ve heard the rumors about the mother. Батька put her in a madhouse, right? Like in the Soviet times. I’m very sorry Belarus is going through all this. It’s a tragedy.

One the one hand I hate Lukashenka and on the other I almost admire his ability to consistently outflank and sabotage Putin with his dumb act…
There was an example this week where he said something stupid and it later turned out to be him refusing to send troops to Uzbekistan…
But the sooner he’s gone the better.

I am wondering whether Lukashenka cares about the possibility of his son being killed or jailed for decades or … after Lukashenka’s death or losing power. Whether his son thinks about his not too bright future too. He is old enough to understand his situation.
Putin is horrible, but in this one thing of hiding / protecting his kids, Putin had been the wiser one, compared to Lukashenka.

Wait, are you implying many citizens of Belarus expect his son to inherit as the next dictator after Lukashenko’s death? Because if not, who cares what his son thinks?
The future is in your hands and when it becomes different depends on your people, not on this one teen from an unhealthy family.

Nobody really knows, so rumors fly. One thing for sure, it’s not humanly possible to explain to anybody who’s not from the region that there’s no chance they dressed like this by accident.

I think it’s easy to explain when one looks at the Ukrainian flag and then at the other graduates around this couple, whose greyness makes the message stand out even more.
Still wondering how one can not care about a life of one’s kid so much.
My mother said everybody knows who the children of Putin and Lukashenko are in any case, so hiding won’t help, but still…

Nobody knows whose idea it was and for what purpose.
I don’t think either of these men are capable of caring for their children. Or anybody. They are very primitive life forms.

From what I’ve read about dictator fathers, they tend to wildly and unpredictably vacilate between utter neglect and smothering obsessive attention….
I don’t think it’s an accident but I’m not sure if it was the father’s idea (hehas his own things to worry about – apparently Putin’s been pushing the union state again pretty hard recently).
In Poland most of the dissidents came from party-ish backgrounds (because they could get away with things others couldn’t) and part of me is wondering if it’s the son’s initiative to flip off dad and his terrible friends or just get some attention (be careful what you wish for as they say).
For that matter it could be mockery of the Ukrainian cause or all-surface no-substance supporters (fashionalbe colors with no substance behind it…)
I’m sure it was intentional and I’m sure it’s sending a message, but I don’t know if we’ll soon find out what the message is or who’s sending it for what audience….

Totally, it could have been a drunken prank, for example. The sad thing is that the people of Belarus will spend the next century interpreting signs and sighing for change instead of doing anything.
