Quirks of History

Now I know where Zelensky gets it:

It’s one of those quirks of history that Joe Biden got a chance for a replay of that moment with today’s Menachem Begin.

  1. The nation of Israel would have never come into existence after World War II without the support of the United States. Begin was a big-mouthed child who knew that he was talking back to a parent who wouldn’t smack him in in the face.

    And so is Zelensky.

    1. Actually, the nation of Israel was created with the help of the USSR. It was Stalin’s project, and he received Golda Meir in Moscow with the greatest pomp and circumstance in 1948. Soviet Jews were even allowed to remember they were Jews and come out into the streets to greet “our Goldele”.

Then Israel told Stalin where to stuff it, and he got pouty.

As for Ukraine, the US was always against Ukrainian nationhood. Bush’s famous Chicken Kiev speech is a case in point. And it’s been Chicken Kiev with every US president since then.

I guess the parent who constantly tries to abort her child would be a better metaphor here.

      1. The US did fight a war over states seceding from the union. From this perspective it would make sense to oppose the breakup of the USSR.

Putin would be sitting in Kyiv by now if it weren’t for U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

  2. That’s a very short sighted statement by the former Israeli prime minister. Without US support Israel would be in a much more precarious situation.

Israel is the one country where US gives a lot more than it gets back.
