A Regular Reminder

Which country in Europe has the highest number of abortions and single-parent households per capita?

Yes, it’s the same country some useful simpletons expect to defend traditional values.

  1. It also has one of the lowest rates of regular communicants in the Church, in spite of all the blathering about Holy Mother Russia. One of Europe’s most irreligious countries!

I view it as a plus, coming from the Middle East where religion is all-pervading, beyond anything you could try to imagine in USA or Europe.

  2. I have been debating Ukraine war with some conservatives recently, and indeed many really believed Russia is some sort of paradise of conservative values. (I have some tolerance for “not our war” position held for purely economic reasons, but get triggered with people implying that Russia should destroy Ukraine to teach the woke West some sort of a lesson.)

If you look at it from a different angle – Russia indeed is a conservative country, it is just a different brand of conservatism. I wanted to say – not the US of the 50-ies, but maybe I am wrong… And I have a feeling that at least some fraction of North American conservatives has a decent understanding of what Russian reality is about (so they do not treat this talk about divorces and abortions as liberal propaganda) but they dream of it anyway. In this framework, abortions and divorces are a manifestation of too much freedom given to women, and perhaps also legacy of the godless communist era, and they will be eventually abolished by Saint-Putin, hopefully.

    1. Some people see conservatism as being solely about “hierarchy.” Abortion, certainly, is totally compatible with that.

That is true but it’s not related to anything in the US (or anything most people in the US can really easily understand and so they project their own models on it which makes it even harder to get).
It’s also post-modern in that there is no truth beyond one’s own power of rationalization. Defensive russians prattle on a lot about the importance of ‘truth’ in the culture but it ends up being a bunch of weird rationalizations about why they’re happy to live in a garbage dump (because they’re a ‘great power’) and about how deeply they feel everything (though ’empathy’ is curiously missing).
russia is its own thing and trying to fix western labels on it is a doomed enterprise and most Americans have no idea how to understand other cultures on their own terms….

    1. \ An example of Russian conservatism for you (in
Russian, but one can use google)

This is an extreme example of Russian insanity. I read many Russian blogs, including pro-Putin ones, but stuff of such calibre is hard to find even there.

I could find extreme examples in my own country Israel, which would falsely present us as Hamas number 2.

This person doesn’t represent Russians either.

Meh… you’re a highly intelligent person and mostly seek out highly intelligent writers but even though I don’t read russian I’ve come across similarly insance ideas from russians.
One russian (on another site) was saying that russian went to war to find “it’s place in the sun” (insane but many pro-putin russians assumed a quick victory that would raise russian prestige). The same russian (who doesn’t live in russia and has no intention of moving back) was saying that russia desperately needs to increase its population by over 100%… just how they expect to do that while killing young russian men of breeding age in the hundreds of thousands and driving hundreds of thousands of others out of the country is not clear but the details don’t matter…

        the thinking was
        1. Invade Ukraine
        2. ??????
        3. Profit!!!!!!!!!

And russian media monitor (and TheKremlinYap) have a large supply of insane ideas and commentary that make up a very large proportion of media that everyday russians have access to.

        1. cliff, “Russia had to do it” or even “we’ll win” are usual insanities, but the ideas of having no pensions and of leaving women with zero reproductive rights to be used as breeding sows are not.

Btw, just yesterday I read on several good Russian telegram channels that abortions in Russia have been sharply declining in the past years due to availability of contraception.

      2. I admit it is extreme, but on the other hand it took me 5 minutes to find it. Because it was mentioned just a couple of days ago by somebody whom I actually read. Putin-level is the guys from the middle of nowhere who volunteer to go to war for money… There are guys who volunteer for ideas, and put a red flag with Jesus image on it on their tanks…
