How to Antagonize People

I don’t understand why leftist protests are always about punishing regular people and creating discomfort for others.

In all of the pro-Ukrainian events, protests, manifestations and activities that I’ve participated, we never tried to be a nuisance. We always make sure we aren’t in anybody’s way. We always clean up after ourselves. The events are positive in spirit. We never try to guilt or scare anybody. We always discuss in advance that the goal is to make passers-by feel better at the end of the event than before they came across it.

And it works. People don’t run away from us in fear because that’s a normal reaction to unhinged behavior. We don’t act unhinged, so we always get a lot of positive engagement. At the most recent event, people were flocking to us because they felt that something good was happening.

If the goal is to make people hate your cause, then you’d behave like these leftist protesters. Stopping the traffic, vandalizing works of art, attacking Christmas trees, scaring kids at the mall – isn’t it obvious that people are going to dislike you and whatever you stand for?

Nobody owes you anything. Nobody owes you attention, support, interest, time, or anything else. If people do decide to give what they don’t have to, you should be grateful. You should never lose the feeling of wonderment at how big their hearts are if they want to give when they don’t have to.

People who think it’s OK to get in the face of complete strangers and wreck their day have a totalitarian mentality. They have lost the capacity to understand that their biggest thing doesn’t have to matter to others because others have their own biggest thing. They can’t accept that nobody has to feel their pain.

Truly, you couldn’t hurt your cause any more than by doing this kind of infantile tantruming.

  1. Pro-Israel, pro-Ukraine, and classic civil rights marches are premised on the fact that the proponents need to win over people who might not yet support the cause but could be assumed to still be morally decent. Thus, they might be convinced by displays of decency. Woke protests start with the assumption that they are enlightened and anyone who is not yet on their side is unenlightened. There is no need to show decency to oppressors. Woke protests become exercises in power marked by the ability to be indecent and get away with it. The frightening thing here is that such protests do appeal to those who want to burn stuff down.

  2. This makes perfect sense if you assume that the protesters are part of a religion. One of the dangers of organized religion historically has been precisely that it so easily offers people an excuse to be transgressive. Think of the female followers of Bacchus tearing apart Orpheus in Greek mythology. 🙂

    1. I have a colleague who went on those traffic-stopping protests during the BLM. She’s very proud of doing it. I asked how it helped African-Americans that she did that but she gets very upset. This is an intelligent person but on this issue there’s a total disconnect in her mind.

      1. That poor woman. There she was, a miserable sinner weighed down with white and educated privileges and you attempted to cast doubt on her only hope of salvation. :p

  3. Let me add, that I think we can agree that this would be wrong even if it were being done by pro-Israel or Ukraine people. People have the right to live their lives and shop for the holidays regardless of whether there is injustice on the other side of the world. There is always going to be some injustice somewhere.

  4. I don’t think these thugs are protesting a particular issue or looking to attract more supporters. Their cause (if we can call it that) is not peace in the ME or free Palestine or whatever but total destruction of the West. (Watch other videos from other malls Canada from the same day–they are openly threatening to kill people. With cops standing by and allowing it, but that’s a separate issue.) For them it’s war–on Christmas, on Christendom (what’s left of it), on Western ways of life etc. None of the considerations you mention comes in it.

  5. You know that scene in “The Blues Brothers” where the “Illinois Nazis” are blocking a bridge over water, at least until Jake and Elwood clear the blockage by encouraging the protesters to jump off the bridge out of the way?

I might have seen something up close like that happen to some Leftist protesters.

Yes, fairly certain, might have. 🙂
