Who are you referring to? If you mean White, middle-class Americans of European descent, of course they are w.e.i.r.d. ! White Educated Industrialised Rich Democratic people who having had it too good for too long are now unwilling to see the writing on the wall.
I’d understand these answers if they came from 13-year-olds who think the most important thing in life is to have fun and hang out with friends. But adults?
Even if you are blessed with a job you love, how do you end up valuing a job more than your own flesh and blood? I find this mentality strange, too. But I’ve never been particularly ambitious. Jobs have always been a means to an end for me.
IKR? Even people who mostly like their jobs… I can’t think of anyone who, if granted sudden financial independence from having to work, wouldn’t opt to spend more time with family. Are there just a lot more people than I thought who secretly dislike their kids? Were they polling single childless people who wouldn’t know how to socialize outside of having to leave the house and go to a job most days?
My husband was always the only person at his job who used all of his paid leave. In our culture, it’s unthinkable that you would refuse the opportunity to spend time with your family. He loves working but vacation time is sacred. Now I’m start to understand why nobody else at his job feels this way.

Who on earth did they poll? I don’t think I know anybody who likes their job *that* much.

I see free association as being necessary to a “fulfilling” American life …
… and so on that basis alone these pollsters can fuck the fuck off, because “I just want to be left alone” polls higher than they do.
