Falling Apart

I gave my first talk to Ukrainian hispanists today. It was good but one of the attendees was in Kharkiv, and we are at the time of day when nightly shelling usually begins. And I’m thinking there can be a missile strike at any moment. I didn’t fall apart at the talk because people have enough problems without me howling like a wounded monkey. But now after the talk, I did fall apart.

I don’t know why I’m such a goose. My child is completely safe, I’m safe. But this hurts like the bloody dickens.

Fucking stupid Russians.

  1. A lot of people seem to see Iran as part of an allied “trio” with Russia and China. Does that jibe with you? I’m not sure it does with me, but I’m far more clueless about foreign policy than I should be (though I’m improving)

    1. Iran is very impressed by Putin’s abject caving to Muslim fundamentalism. Plus, Russia buys their Shaheed drones for enormous amounts of money. There are hopes that Putin’s successor will be a fundamentalist Muslim.

China doesn’t have a consistent foreign policy that anybody has been able to notice. It’s kind of just there but it has such economic problems that who can blame it?

  2. I wish I could show my solidarity with something more than words.

What makes me angry is that I live in the heart of Europe, only one thousand miles away from Kiyv, and people are blathering about Biden and Trump and the US elections in which they cannot vote, six and a half thousand miles away. Europe is burning nightly, and people behave as if nothing were amiss.

    1. Thank you, words really do help.

I watch Spanish news, and you’d think Gaza was in Madrid, the coverage is so intense. It’s very disappointing.

  3. Russia used to have mixed feelings about Iran, and it used to be neutral with respect to Israel. Apparently the war is going very differently compared to Russia’s expectations, so they are doing a lot of things to please Iran. Supposedly they are going to provide modern planes and air defense systems to Iran, which may be a problem for Israel.

As far as China goes, their MO is to sit and wait for the body of the enemy to float by… But if somebody (and this applies to both the West and Russia) wants to deplete themselves fighting actual wars, the Chinese will not complain. This is THE policy, not lack of policy. Taiwan is a special case. Taiwan, according to Taiwan, is the REAL China, whose territory includes mainland China, and Communist govt are the usurpers. (New generation of the Taiwanese want it to just be an independent country, but it is not the official ideology… Unless it changed very recently.)
