If you still had any illusions about the UN and the Red Cross, you’d lose them if you observe their actions in Ukraine.
This is Maryana before and after captivity:

She was finally exchanged yesterday but she can’t return to her native city of Mariupol. It doesn’t exist anymore.
This is a video of Maryana talking to her mother for the first time since she was released:
Anyone who still believes in the neutrality and benevolent purposes of any NGO or quasi-NGO today is either delusional or in bad faith.

Maryana is reciting a poem dedicated to her mother that she wrote in captivity:

Apologies Clarissa, but I’m going to have to call BS on this one.
While its possible she might have been abused. The other two are noticeably not true. If she had been beaten there would have been signs, and she doesn’t look like she lost any weigh so starved is probably out too. The only difference in the before and after photos is she doesn’t have makeup on. That is it.
The nails are all fine, the fingers not broken or misshapen as they would have been if broken previously, her hair is in more or less good shape, no scars from cuts, no bruises, no bumps from where bones were broken, no crook in nose = no broken nose, etc.
This is propaganda.
She probably was in a prison camp for two years, but leaving aside the fact that she was a police detective. What reason would Russia have to do more than detain her. Now if she was caught as a potential spy/saboteur that would be different, but again no signs of torture, no signs of starvation, no signs of beatings. If she had been deemed a spy she would have been executed. If she was a combatant they wouldn’t have released her.
From what I was able to glean, she sent 2 letters to her mother saying she was imprisoned and being tortured, starved, and abused. Your a logical women, how likely is it that a prison doing said acts would allow a prisoner to send a letter read or unread to the outside. To me looking in from the outside this is propaganda, specifically based off the “believe all women” that has been ingrained in most guys at least in the West. We have her word that this happened, but the photos of her do not agree with this on at least two of the three counts.
I’m open to the possibility of being proven wrong, but from my outside perspective I have watched an absolutely enormous amount of propaganda being generated in this conflict, and this piece has all the hallmarks of a woman being used whether willingly or unwillingly to stoke up more support.

This is more about occupation than POWs. I have relatives under occupation. My 38yo cousin might die as a result. I don’t know how to come to terms with this.

“What reason would Russia have to do more than detain her.”
russians beat up _everyone_. including those on their side… recently a judge affiliated with the former ruling party of Poland ‘defected’ to Belarus (russia itself was too hard to get to apparently) and a day or two later he appeared in a short film with a number of bruises on his face and speaking unidiomatic Polish (a text written by a belarusian?)
I also remember a report on generalsvr (usual caveats) saying a decision had been made to deal with Solovyov and a few days later he shows up on air with a heavily bruised face and he refused to explain them….
I’m not interested in the precise details of the abuse dealt out to her but I assume they would lay off for a time before she was released….
But that’s incidental to the major scandal of the red cross carrying out russian orders.

People are trying to understand the actions of the Russians through logic and reason, and that fails every time because this isn’t what it’s about. Why are they raping each other with brooms in the trenches, filming it, and posting online? Why are they doing everything they are doing? There’s no answer.
But you are exactly right. I was trying to attract attention to the fact that the Red Cross promised to get this woman to Ukraine and instead handed it over to Russia. Red Cross and the UN have been horrid throughout the war. I call on people to not donate to the Red Cross and support the withdrawal of the US from funding the UN.

I also want to remind everybody that Solovyov used to be very liberal and a big supporter of Khodorkovsky. He switched his political allegiances dramatically after some mysterious events that badly impacted his health.
