Jewish Help Needed

People who practice Judaism, please help. On Shabbos, when do you light the candles? Do you do it before leaving for the synagogue? Or after you come back?

This is for my translation, and I hope I’m in time before Shabbos starts and it’s too late for you to answer.

  1. According to Chabad’s halachic times about 19 minutes before sundown Friday evening. There’s a location widget on their site so you can find out what time to light candles by location/zip code.

  2. I don’t practice Judaism, but it would need to be before. Once you’ve recited the prayers in the Friday evening service, you’ve already accepted Shabbat and are no longer allowed to light candles.

  3. I was away on holiday and so I didn’t see this post.

Anyway, it’s a woman’s task to light the Shabbat candles, one of women’s most important tasks in Judaism. Typically, it is done by the mother. Only if there are no women in the home are the candles lit by a man, typically the husband.

The candles are lit about half an hour before sundown, though in summer even up to two hours earlier.

Meanwhile the men will be on their way to the synagogue. For the lady/ladies in the house Shabbat begins from the very moment the candles are lit and the prayers over them are said.
