The News Cycle

Wait, what? Another assassination attempt on Trump?

I’ve had an intensely relaxing family weekend and avoided all US news. What exactly did I miss?

Seriously, one can’t turn away for three minutes around here. The news cycle goes faster than the washer drum.

      1. I’m relieved that they can’t seem to recruit anybody but the completely obviously mentally ill. I think it means we have competence mostly on our side, and theirs can’t inspire loyalty and devotion from anybody who isn’t insane.

  1. *Sad Trombone noises* Suspected Trump Gun Man Was Once Charged With a Weapon of Mass Destruction:

…the suspected gunman involved in an apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida on Sunday, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction over 20 years ago.

“I figured he was either dead or in prison by now,” Tracy Fulk, the charging officer in the case, tells WIRED…

According to court records from the Guilford District Court in North Carolina obtained by WIRED, Routh was arrested by the Greensboro Police Department on December 16, 2002.

Local reporting from Greensboro News and Record in 2002 states that Routh was pulled over by police during a traffic stop. Routh then drove to the business United Roofing, where he proceeded to barricade himself for three hours, the police said at the time.

Fulk says Routh was well known for getting into armed confrontations with police. “I wasn’t the only one who had a standoff with him,” she says. “We always knew he had weapons.” Guilford County court records show Routh was charged dozens of times, often for driving-related offenses, going back to the early 1980s. Asked why he wasn’t in jail, Fulk says, “All we can do is arrest them and then obviously it goes into the court system and they decide all of that. It’s frustrating at times.”

Weapon of Mass Destruction= fully automatic weapon. The federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.
