Capacity to Change Course

Once again, I have to say how impressive Trump’s capacity to learn is. Forget politics for a second. There’s a great lesson here for each of us and our non-political lives.

To give just one example, throughout his first term and the 2020 campaign, Trump seemed congenitally incapable of surrounding himself with brilliant people. Whether he feared being eclipsed or simply didn’t think it was necessary, he was always surrounded with blundering, blethering fools.

You’d think this is a character flaw that’s impossible to overcome, especially in one’s late seventies. But in this campaign, Trump suddenly adopted a completely different course. He surrounded himself with mega popular people with gigantic platforms. Some of these people are significantly younger than him, yet he doesn’t act like he feels upstaged or threatened by Musk, Rogan, RFK, etc. Whether you personally like them or not, it’s undeniable that they have a massive following.

And there are many examples like these, making the 2024 campaign immensely different from what we saw in 2020. Again, forget partisanship. It’s about how it’s never too late to change course. And that’s good news for all of us.

  1. Agree. His Rogan appearance was fantastic. He came off relatable, sharp, and incredibly to me, relatable.

He played his cards incredibly well, and now he has a near complete mandate to enact his policies. He will be a historical figure.

        1. It’s so bizarre. Usually, a politician in a tight race begs for more time. Any additional minute is a blessing. But here she rejected the entire opportunity because it requires more time. The whole thing is ridiculous.

The Dems have nobody but themselves to blame. They should have found a real candidate when Biden stepped down, not this airheaded lightweight.

          1. I guess we’ll see if they learn anything.

I’d love to go back to a situation where every election isn’t an existential crisis because the Dems are running somebody who is either mentally incompetent, thinks America is basically Satan and needs to be destroyed, or both.

Maybe run somebody normal next time?

    1. Except Biden; he clearly wanted to have a second go but his mental decline has been precipitous. Trump, on the other had, is just a few years younger and still very sharp.

I think it’s down to genetics at this point. It’s not like Trump is a paragon of healthy habits.

      1. He would probably have wanted a second term were he or were he not compos mentis. He’s not the kind of man who would sacrifice ambition and power to duty. So yes,

Not sure what unhealthy habits Mr. Trump has, aside from his germophobia and trust of evil bureaucratic weasels like Dr. “puppy-and-gay-killer” Fauci

  2. And now that he will have power again, it will be a great study in how he deals with people whose presence around him is also inspired by their own desire for greatness. He didn’t return to Twitter, for instance, because of the growth of Truth Social and non-compete issues. How will Elon deal with this now real competition? How will Trump? We campaign on poetry but govern in prose, as the saying goes. It will be an interesting sight to see as things unfold.
