I was looking for a good, wholesome Christmas movie to kick off the seasonal activities. The first thing I found was this:

(This may sound like a parody, but it’s not)
It’s about cardinals that are to elect a new pope. There is an evil cardinal who is conservative and against Islam. There is another cardinal who is good and humble. Then near the end, the good and humble cardinal gives a speech about how we should not be prejudiced against Muslims. Everyone claps and vote for him as pope. Ralph Fiennes character then finds out that the newly elected pope in fact has a uterus, and is an intersex genetic woman. Well, at least I laughed while reading the synopsis. The festivities have been thus kicked off through a bout of laughter.

I always enjoy Charlie Brown’s Christmas & the original Grinch cartoon, Babes in Toyland, Home Alone (I’ve only seen the first so I can’t vouch for any other), and A Christmas Story. As a child I enjoyed Mickey Mouse’s retelling of A Christmas Carol but not sure how it holds up as an adult.

Did you find a movie? Let me put in a plug for the Muppet Christmas Carol, which oddly enough hews closer to Dickens’ prose than any other movie version. Michael Caine COMMITS to his role as Scrooge, entirely undaunted by being surrounded by Muppets, and the music is great.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is a classic; also, a couple of good cartoons are the original Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) and “The Grinch that Stole Christmas”
