On Brand

People are so out of it, it’s unbelievable.

Yes, he does care. Fetterman has developed a very recognizable brand with this outfit. He’s being consistent with his brand identity. Spectators might have missed him if it weren’t for the outfit. Instead of dissolving himself in the crowd as yet another no-name guy in a suit, Fetterman made himself the focus of attention by staying on brand.

This sweet, childish naiveté is actually quite upsetting to observe in adult people. I screenshotted one of a lineup of comments making the same clueless point.

    1. His whole thing is that he’s not an elitist snob like the rest of the Dems. He’s delivering this message brilliantly with the outfit. Just the height alone wouldn’t do that.

Nah. He just looks silly and childish by deliberately dressing inappropriately for official occasions.

  2. He has suffered strokes and other health issues. It may be that his choice of dress has more to do with his body comfort from day to day than any other reason. Some of the medical issues described on his wiki page look like heart failure. That can be very uncomfortable. His feet have swollen before. It can be hard to find appropriate clothing when ones body is uncooperative. And a condition like that can vary wildly from day to day. He is a big guy and has overheated and fainted before. The shorts might be for temperature regulation.

I have a family member who is partially deaf. She gave a presentation at a company about deafness. A coworker told her that she felt terrible because all this time the coworker had no idea she was hard of hearing. All of the things that she had perceived as personality quirks that grated on her nerves were actually behaviors coping with deafness such as asking for someone to repeat themselves, turning her body at a specific angle to hear sound better, etc.

  3. Yeah, I can sort of relate. My mother and myself had minor strokes (transient ischemic attacks) several years ago. TIAs are temporary, usually leaving few residual symptoms, in my case some vocabulary difficulty, A pain in the ass when you’re used to writing technical reports, but maybe that is just part of being an old phart, after all my Mom also has to sometimes search for a word. Anyway, happy for Fetterman’s recovery. .
