Commenting Woes

Friends, I’ve made changes to commenting to see if we can solve the glitch that appeared recently. Please leave a comment and let me see if anything improved.

  1. WP assures me they haven’t made any wholesale changes recently but I logged out and couldn’t leave more than a one-letter comment on my own blog. It’s ludicrous.

    1. The comment interface looks the same as it used to on my phone…. but on a computer it’s still farked…. formerly once you type a letter a little strip came up with a link to sign in and now…. it doesn’t.

        1. It let’s you type out a full message if you’re replying to a message, like yours above.

Oh, but I can’t put in my email and name. Still borked!

    2. I wanted to leave a comment for the Q&A Physiology post yesterday but it was impossible, on either my phone or a computer. I now see that it lets me reply to another comment but not write an original comment.

I hope this gets fixed soon.

Also, where are the Anonymouses? They haven’t been around for some time…

      1. That is interesting, the same is true for me. I am completely unable to leave a comment, but can reply. Thanks for figuring that one out!

        1. Also, I am not able to leave a name/email (so can only comment as anaonymous since I do not have a wordpress or facebook) and if I want to comment again, I need to leave the website and come back. Looks to me like some sort of a software deterioration. Strange.

          1. Clarissa, your worpress website also stopped showing the summary of the last comments made on the side tab and the button to submit anonymous questions is also gone. Was that one of the changes you made or is that independent of your attempt to solve the commenting problem?

  2. One thing I’ve seen in a place or two is that it might be related to the theme you’re using… I notice that all the other things (like search and recent comments etc) are also missing from your front page.
Maybe changing the theme would help?

      1. You must have jinxed it when you wrote recently that the comments and exchanges with your readers were what made this blog all worthwhile. Some maleficent gremlin probably decided that it would be great fun to play havoc with you and your readers, just in case we were feeling too complacent with ourselves. Good grief, is that what some people take for a hobby nowadays?

  3. I am still able to comment but:

It is still giving me the “whoa! You just posted that!” message even though I only hit ‘comment’ once.

And, the starting gray text in the box, “Type / to choose a block” no longer disappears when I start typing. First line contains that, plus my text, overlapping. Annoying but not fatal.

  5. Under this new system, you can’t format replies. So you can’t use quotation marks, or embed tweets or images, use bold/italic font etc. Nothing. The top panel in the reply box used to have all the formatting options, and pressing “/” used to open up more options (paragraph, tweet, image, quotation) but it’s all gone.

  6. Also, in the previous version you had a side panel which showed all the latest comments that had been posted under various topics. It was a handy way to see where the latest conversation was happening without having to check each individual topic and scroll down to check if someone posted a reply. It’s gone now.

  7. I second all of Stringer Bell’s comments. Also, it doesn’t allow me to write my name and email address, but I’m not Anonymous, it’s Avi.

    1. Thank you! I really appreciate it. Let’s hope the commenting drama resolves itself. This incessant fussing with technology to justify salaries is very annoying.
