Bored Is Good

I want to add that the best, most wonderful moment is when the kid says, “I’m booooored. There’s nothing to do, I’m so booooored.” If the parents breathe through the guilt and anxiety this causes them and simply do nothing, the kid’s natural curiosity and ingenuity will kick in. That’s when things start getting invented and the imagination gets unleashed.

“I’m bored” is good. It’s the door to everything wonderful that a kid’s mind can produce.

  1. No wonder kids have ADHD, they aren’t allowed to just be bored and sit around to do nothing or find something. As a kid, if I told my parents I was bored, they’d have me doing cleaning so I’d rather read something or go outside to look busy, I’d read anything to avoid work.

Subbing in a lot of high school classes just means taking attendance and making sure the kids don’t go on TikTok or play games, so I have a lot of downtime to myself. I use that time to think up scenarios for my books and the next chapters of my latest novel, it keeps my mind occupied and prevents me from falling asleep. Even when I’m on my phone, I’m reading stories on Wattpad to keep my mind occupied so I’m not being mindless, I’m not scrolling Instagram

    1. My kid has ADHD but has always been allowed to be bored (and is actually excellent at entertaining himself). And he’s had very limited access to screens and plenty of time outdoors, messing about with twigs in the dirt. Although we didn’t get him diagnosed until 5th grade – he needed accommodations heading into middle school – it has been clear to us since he was a preschooler that his brain worked a little differently than most. He also a kick-ass drummer, putting his constant need to tap on things to good use!
