Putin has been expressing this belief for years.
And Ukraine was never on the verge of joining the NATO. These are fantasies, like “men can give birth.” We should be better than this myth-making.

As I’ve maintained, it’s not the NATO expansion, it’s the EU expansion. Russia benefitted enormously from its colonies in Eastern Europe, but they would all benefit more from ditching Russia and joining the EU. This leaves Russia alone thinking of itself as the centre of an empire when it is actually the eastern frontier of Europe.

This is a much better explanation than the NATO, thank you. I’ve despaired to hear people be reasonable about this. Russia and Ukraine have been at war for 350 years but, in the current iteration, it’s absolutely much MUCH more about the EU than the NATO.
