Denial of Reality

Speaking of denying reality, here’s a real fact that goes against the “it’s because of the NATO expansion” narrative:

Actually, this proves exactly the opposite: It shows how scared to death Putin is by the threat of NATO deterrence. Yes, Putin has always believed that Ukraine belongs to Russia — but he didn’t go into a panic about publicly expressing that belief until Ukraine appeared on the verge of joining NATO.

Putin knows that attacking any NATO country would immediately put Russia at war with the United States, possibly escalating into World War III, and he isn’t stupid enough to risk it.

I know that you think NATO is a paper tiger, Clarissa. But for the past 77 years since NATO was founded, no Russian leader has been foolish enough to agree with you.

    1. Putin has been expressing this belief for years.

And Ukraine was never on the verge of joining the NATO. These are fantasies, like “men can give birth.” We should be better than this myth-making.

  2. As I’ve maintained, it’s not the NATO expansion, it’s the EU expansion. Russia benefitted enormously from its colonies in Eastern Europe, but they would all benefit more from ditching Russia and joining the EU. This leaves Russia alone thinking of itself as the centre of an empire when it is actually the eastern frontier of Europe.

    1. This is a much better explanation than the NATO, thank you. I’ve despaired to hear people be reasonable about this. Russia and Ukraine have been at war for 350 years but, in the current iteration, it’s absolutely much MUCH more about the EU than the NATO.
