Youthful Beverages

For her teenagers, soda and energy drinks occupy a unique role. “It’s a kind of social currency for them,” she says.

Her 17-year-old daughter, Olivia, confirms this dynamic.

“ I feel like when you walk into first period in the morning, everyone has like a Red Bull, an energy drink — it’s a social construct for sure,” says Olivia.

This is supposed to be in the Portland, Oregon area. I don’t deny people’s capacity to behave in weird ways but this is not the fashion where I live. Red Bull is what 50-year-old contractors in the construction industry drink. I have not seen it among students since  2011. Very rarely there is a Propel but other than that it’s either Starbucks or a water bottle. Americans all must carry a water bottle. It’s right there with the driver licence. I’ve gotten so Americanized that I also feel weird if I haven’t had anything to drink for over 30 minutes.

    1. Is it possible that it will be limited to these 3 strikes?

Three strikes and we are out?

Maybe we can move on after this?

I know, I’m being naive but what else can one do but hope?

        1. at this point, I’m not entirely sure what is the difference between the two parties. At this rate, I’m sitting the next election out.

          1. You and me both, my friend.

I’m getting major Iraq and Libya vibes from this.

What, what is this insane obsession with the Middle East that the US foreign policy has? Why do we need to exist in a permanent state of warfare in that one region? It’s been 30+ years of endless warfare.

      1. I heard his 5 minute address. It made my skin crawl. “If they retaliate in any way we’ll hit them harder. I and Bibi were the best team ever during this operation. Blah blah.”

Utterly psychotic. Didn’t even appear like it was him from his speech patterns. A short schitzo speech that would look more appropriate coming out of lindsay graham, and left without taking any questions.

    1. Not to mention nuking US’s credibility for all future negotiations. So Trump said he was going to wait two weeks before making a decision, schedules talks with Iran in this period, and bombs them three days later. And then we learn this two weeks thing was just a ruse.

      These are not serious people.
