Other People’s History

I wrote about this concerning Spain. You can’t make your history matter to people who are not related to it and don’t perceive it as their own. I care about WW2 because my grandfather fought in it. The war between Peru and Ecuador, on the other hand, means nothing to me. I still wouldn’t deface the monuments if I visited those countries, of course, but then I’m cultured in a way that most people on the planet will never be.

  1. This is why these bastards don’t belong in Europe, they have no respect for our ancestral cultures and think we’re infidels going to hell. I’m glad my ancestors kicked these chupapollas out of Spain, we need another Reconquista

  2. The minister says his permanent residency right will be revoked.

I wonder how that will square with the judicial process. Even if a crime has been committed – and I doubt this is the case, being probably just some administrative infraction sanctioned by a pecuniary fine – which judge will uphold such a disproportionate punishment, procedurally speaking?

This is why so many non-Westerners find the West so attractive: it is a society which doesn’t seem to have – institutionally, culturally and socially – the means to suppress those who weaponise it against itself. It’s a soft-bellied giant and its enemies know its weak spot and use this knowledge to their best advantage.

It’s like fair play in sport: an honour-based code of unspoken rules only works in sports where those who infringe the code are rapidly dealt with and unilaterally expelled from the competition: tennis, rugby and a few other gentlemen’s sports. In other, more plebeian sports – such as association football, basketball and the like – compliance with the rules of the game plays against you since rule-breakers can and do get away with it, putting fair players at a disadvantage. The tyranny of “rights” even for abusers of the system in the West will be its undoing.

    1. Maybe he doesn’t have permanent residency yet, and what is being revoked is his right to eventually get it.
