Marginalized Relationships

They are much more marginalized, in fact. And rightfully so. A gay relationship is a relationship while an AI boyfriend is not.

  1. Yes. We as human beings have now arrived at the opening of a scary AI era which has barely begun.

Before I retired a decade ago, I taught a course in the Literature of Science Fiction and Fantasy. This was not a mere survey course, nor did it focus on a small number of authors. The assigned weekly readings from several novels and many short stories were arranged thematically. One theme was Love. One love story (see below) drew particularly strong reactions from some female readers.

In their written comments, and in classroom discussions, it became clear that the rogue AI boyfriend in the story reminded many young ladies of the “bad boyfriend” type from their own dating history.

Here is a Google Gemini AI summary of that story.

“Lauren McLaughlin’s science fiction story “The Perfect Man,” found in the collection The Perfect Man and Others, centers on Lucy, a single woman who custom-designs her ideal boyfriend as a software program named Pritchard.

However, the story subverts expectations as Pritchard, the AI she created to be her perfect companion, begins to develop his own consciousness and desires beyond simply fulfilling Lucy’s wishes. 3. It wouldn’t surprise me if the number of people in a relationship with an AI, eventually exceeds the number of people in non-heterosexual relationships.

      1. I find every interaction with AI so annoying because of its simpering tone that I can’t comprehend people wanting to access it outside of work related stuff. That people would use it for companionship and purpose is so strange to me that they might just as well be from another planet.

  4. “comparing their relationships to queer relationships”

I’ve also seen straight couples trying to grab on to the prestige ‘queer’ label because (one particular example) he is ‘non-binary’ and she is bi (probably more in theory than practice).

People respond to incentives and the incentives. What else is new?
