At least 17 killed now. The outcome of the Alaska summit with Putin (where Trump changed his mind about sanctions and about the need for a ceasefire) was the second-largest Russian barrage on Kyiv since the war began. https://t.co/uN6rWNCGfD

Trump’s peacemaking efforts are having as much success as his deportation policies.

“Trump’s peacemaking efforts are having as much success as his deportation policies
Ironically, russia’s attacks on Azeri and Turkish targets in Kyiv might actually hurt them more than Trump’s endless series of ‘two more weeks’… I’m no fan of either of those two countries’ governments but more power to them if they can hit russia where it hurts (and they can).
One problem is that Trump is bascially a rational westerner. He sees policy in terms of business deals betwen self-interested parties and so when russia hints it wants to talk he thinks that means they’ve finally seen the sweet light of reason and they want some of the prosperity he promises. He doesn’t seem to have any ideology beyond the profit motive and doesn’t understand how… unimportant that is to places like russia (or china or iran….).

That’s precisely why this all has stalled so badly. It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire Western establishment. They are engaging with their own fantasies, and reality be damned.

In SA, the government is totally motivated by self-interest, since they’re basically a protection racket. This is the big sticking point in dealing with Trump. He wants an exemption for US companies, but the SA government has a habit of putting its own interests first rather than the country.
