Daily, I’m observing academics destroy their own jobs. But they are not alone. Journalists do the same thing:
Without freedom of speech, there’s no journalism. Anything can be labeled abusive and hateful. You’d think a journalist would be aware how easy it is to mark her as hate speechifier if arresting people for saying words becomes the norm. But no, it doesn’t sink in.

Must be nice to be part of privileged minority whose feelings it is illegal to hurt. I sigh when I think of all the people I could have arrested and put in jail, if my feelings were protected by law….

“Journalists do the same thing”
As someone with some training in journalistic practice, ethics and aesthetics… the quoted bit of the article is far from the worst I’ve seen, but they need quotes and not only summaries of opinions….
It is a controversy about free speech and journalists ideally don’t take a stand but rather present facts and quotes from relevant people/organizations.
Had the writer done that it would be a far more effective critique of the arrest and current British restrictive speech policies (which are indefensible).
