Self-management

I don’t know how these parents achieve these results. My kid is 9, and she wouldn’t let me manage her school affairs for love or money. She doesn’t even like me knowing when she has a project or a test at school.

“This is my business, mommy. I know how to handle my own business. Here’s a book, go read it. Or fold some laundry. I know how much you enjoy that.” She’s not being sarcastic. I do love folding laundry, a pastime I discovered in my dotage.

I suggested volunteering as a recess monitor and she asked if I was trying to be funny.

  1. This lack of management skills with work is terrifying, parents ought to not interfere with their children’s work lives in a way. I’ve been managing my work and school schedules by myself since high school, I’d be embarrassed if my mother interfered with my job. Heck, I finished writing the second short novel in a duology earlier today after finishing the first installment last Monday. It was just a weird experiment I wanted to try to see if I could write two short novels in two weeks before I start work tomorrow. I’d like to see these young kids do that 😂

  2. The only thing that makes sense to me about this is, seeing as the youngest of Gen Z was born in 2012, maybe it’s something like the neighbor the GenZ-er babysits for sees mom outside and says “hey, do you know if GenZ will be available next Tuesday?” and mom answers and thus survey respondents say, “I guess that counts as ‘talking to my manager…'” Other than that, I got nuthin’.

      1. I’m glad to think it’s fake but I work with adult people who require endless reminders to sign paperwork or fill out forms. For months, I remind and remind and remind to no effect. And these are adult people who think my role is to be their mommy.
