There’s a couple at work who have been living together for many years. In his absence, she refers to him as “my husband.” He refers to her as “my girlfriend.”
I always wonder if they know this about each other.

Sounds to me like low grade status seeking. For women ‘husband’ conveys higher status than ‘boyfriend’ while for men (arguably) ‘girlfriend’ conveys higher status than wife…. (not least because a ‘wife’ is presumed to be stuck with you while a ‘girlfriend’ stays with you by choice…
