Sounds to me like low grade status seeking. For women ‘husband’ conveys higher status than ‘boyfriend’ while for men (arguably) ‘girlfriend’ conveys higher status than wife…. (not least because a ‘wife’ is presumed to be stuck with you while a ‘girlfriend’ stays with you by choice…
