I was aware of the perversion of Putinesque Russia but I had no idea of the extent to which it could go.
I was struck in particular by only 8% church attendance on Sundays: I thought it would be around 15-20% at least.
The sexual perversion instead does not strike me at all: many of the Russians who have constantly been streaming into Europe these past few years do give off perversion vibes: kinky practices, decadent outlook, extreme sexual adventures… They remind me of Weimar Germany in the 1920s and ’30s.
I should have paid more attention to the demographics of the two Russian Orthodox parishes in my city. The larger one, under the Moscow Patriarchate, is around 60% Moldovans, about 20-25% Ukrainians and the rest, the absolute minority, ethnic Russians. At the other, much smaller, parish, which is ROCOR, ethnic Russians – many of whom are already second and third generation descendants – make up barely half of the parishioners, with the rest being Ukrainians and Rumanians. Which means that the large numbers of Russians living here never come to church.

After decades of communism, I am surprised by those 8% who do attend.
As an atheist living in a very religious country, I do not view low religiosity as a problem. Russia does have numerous problems, but low church attendance isn’t one of them.

Another useful statistic would be deaths from diseases of despair – drug addiction and alcoholism. While there are serious issues with deaths from drugs in the USA, Russian men have been drinking themselves to death for a long time.

Of course, there’s an additional problem of Slavs getting addicted more easily and faster because we have a gene that makes us recycle alcohol very fast, thus necessitating increasing doses to feel any effect.

But Kid, what I was questioning is could communism, i.e., the lack of merit/equality of outcome produce a lack of hope resulting in greater male drunkeness? From personal experience of employing young people, every single young man drove himself harder when he found a girl, and that much more driven when he became a father. Neither the ethnicity of the man nor his belief system seemed to matter much, it was a basic drive for more contracts, more hours, more money.
My hunch is that a system removing opportunity for improvement could well produce male despair escaping into drunkeness/drug addiction. And Russians would just be a couple of generations further into certain failure than the other Slavs.

Of course, socialism was a major depressive factor. It’s normal for people to want to do their best, to achieve, to compete. When all that is taken and perverted, the results are dire. For men, it’s an absolute scourge that kills masculinity.

As far as I can see, the Russians were drinking themselves to death long before “being replaced” by anybody was a thing… I never heard such a thing in the Soviet time. Also, while I agree that this replacement idea is somewhat popular among the nationalists now, I am not sure how much it affects the general population.
