An Illusion of Activity

JD Vance is asking Americans to have patience until the economy improves. In the meantime, Trump pursues yet another harebrained scheme for a “peace deal” in Ukraine. Can anybody point towards the electorate that voted for Trump so that he can dedicate most of his time to chasing these fictitious peace deals overseas? It’s been months now, and what exactly have Americans gotten out of all this peace-dealing?

This is what I mean when I talk about the withering away of the nation-state. Nothing can be achieved nationally (or internationally), so these fake shows are put on to pretend there’s a flurry of Very Important Business being conducted.

  1. “Nothing can be achieved nationally (or internationally)”

Except for scams… don’t forget that. Scams on top of scams on top of more scams… that’s all anyone can achieve now.

This reminds me of those child-free videos where people brag how their lack of children allows them to be insufferably smug about spending their massive amounts of free time being infantile and boring.

Trump can’t really do much (or doesn’t want to) see he’s insufferably smug about kabuki ‘peace’ talks and tarrifs without actually doing much to reshore production.

The loss of the nation state is accompanied by (fed by?) the loss of structure and meaning in the everyday lives of individuals…. brunching and ‘negotiating’ toward collapse.

    1. Oh yes, I saw two such child-free videos since yesterday. Both share how it’s great not to have children because it provides great freedom to… do nothing whatsoever of any interest. “I can buy ugly tchotchkes! I can watch cartoons!” Ridiculous stuff.

      1. I’m childless by choice, but that’s because I never wanted kids and I take care of a younger brother with autism. I just never had that urge for children but I do work with children and like them, I just prefer to have some peace and quiet when I get home. The idea of not wanting children to act like a big kid myself is bizarre, I’m an adult and I like adult things. I’m a childless adult who acts like an adult, it’s like they never grew up

        1. Huge difference between “Childless so I can spend all my money on myself” and “Childless because I’m not interested in getting married” which is the responsible pro-civilization choice in that situation.

    1. I feel like that’s waning, but I’m out of touch with the Evangelly scene these days, so maybe I don’t get enough news.

      1. Just like with all institutions, how the people feel and what they actually support on the ground has no connection to how the institution behaves.
