For the first two years of N’s local job, we refused his company’s offer of a free Sam’s Club membership. It seemed very unnecessary because all the exact same stuff is available at Walmart across the road from Sam’s. Nobody was kind enough to explain. Then we figured it out.

  3. Costco goes a bit further. They have their $60 Classic membership, but for $120 you get executive membership, which allows shipping from 9am-10pm exclusively for executive members.

  4. I did wonder! I had gone with churchladies a couple times and had a chance to compare prices, and never saw anything that would justify the membership fee.

    1. The executive membership has a rebate system that more than pays for the entire cost of membership for us. It didn’t occur to me that it is a method of social screening although their fantastic return policy makes sense in that light.

      The bulk packaging works for us and I actually like going to the business Costco (the regular one in our area is heavily consumer oriented) because I can get 30-50 pounds of meat in one piece at a significantly lower cost and just repackage it myself for use in smaller quantities.

  5. Elites stopped paying the social cost of promoting basic decorum, so they now must pay a financial cost to escape the disorder that followed.

    If there is any truth in this saying, then the cut costs were very much economic, monetary, rather than the vague “setting a good example for plebes” sentiment.
