Magical Beverage

I had a long dental procedure today, and when the anesthetic wore off, the pain was unpleasant. I had a full day, though, and had to be able to speak. So I did something I hate to do and took a painkiller. It had zero effect. None. Zilch.

I suffered and suffered.

In utter dismay, I bought an energy drink. And guess what? It removed the pain completely and immediately. I’m now scared of that beverage because what is it that they put into it for such an effect?

  1. I wonder if you could get the same effect by simply drinking a strong coffee. It can enhance painkillers and helps headaches.

    1. I did feel an unusually strong craving for coffee, actually. Maybe this is exactly what my body was suggesting.

I had no idea that caffeine can act as a painkiller.

  2. Caffeine can act as a mild painkiller all by itself (it’s also a bronchodilator: meaning it does some of the same stuff as an asthma inhaler but safer), but it also enhances the effects of standard painkillers such as tylenol.

      1. I have spent embarrassing spans of my life carefully titering off of coffee, in order to preserve its medicinal effects for when I need them.

At the very least, it’s safer than any headache med, asthma inhaler, or laxative. The trick is to treat it like medicine.

          1. Yeah, but dang. It’s the only recreational drug I indulge in. I still want to drink a quart of coffee every morning, even when I’ve carefully got down to half a cup.

            Sigh.

            1. I make mine at least half decaf so that I can drink the quantity that I want and titrate the caffeination up or down depending on how I’m feeling. It fools my brain pretty well.

LOL, well, my late wife and I took our oaths rather seriously; have since weaned myself off cigars and coffee; use a treadmill when the weather sucks; never did enjoy drugs, and too old to drink for impact despite family inclination — men who figured there were only two real drinks in a mickey of Scotch * ;-D
