There’s No App for That

People are very nutty. Yes, parents know their child better than anybody. Why do we need AI and apps? Children love wordplay. They’ve always loved wordplay. And they’ve always managed to do it without any technology at all. A child doesn’t want or need to stare at an app. She should see her mother’s and father’s faces and not apps.

First, mom stares at a screen to build an app. Then, the kid stares at the app mom built. This whole time they could be looking at each other, goofing around, creating funny new words. No app can substitute time with mommy and daddy. It’s insane that one even has to say this.

  1. I don’t understand *how* you would use Google translate to make nonsense words, let alone why it was necessary. I can make up a nonsense word now: fleen. Why would I need an app for that?

  2. People are very lonely. And Americans even more than other populations.

I fear that you, Clarissa, may not fathom how lonely some people are, even when they are surrounded by people. It’s a very unhealthy state of mind to live in, but it’s where millions of people are.

For people who are existentially lonely an app is a surrogate: a surrogate teacher, parent, playmate, anyone and anything that may give the illusion that they are not alone.

  3. My kids must be geniuses. They invent all sorts of words without ever using an electronic device!

Why would you take the magic away by mechanizing this?

  4. The cynic in me thinks that these stories are all false. Founders have incentives to “personalize” their products and provide an emotional backstory behind them so they don’t look like the demons they are. “I invented ___ because my mother died of ___” is just a way to get ahead in the funding game and market your product more effectively. Anyone can code, but do you have a satisfying story to tell?

    1. And given that we know for a fact that silicon valley tech people send their kids to schools with zero screens and forbid their children from using them at home, you can bet she isn’t letting her son get hooked on phone apps.
