Black and Brown

I understand black. But I most certainly can’t comprehend what brown has to do with it. Why are African Americans, who absolutely do have a legitimate historical grievance, lumped together with recent arrivals who showed up willingly? They weren’t dragged anywhere in chains. To the contrary, they insisted on coming. Probably went to great lengths to come. Why is anything’s owed to them?

    1. Mamdani and his wife, who come from fabulous riches, appropriate the suffering of ghetto blacks, who have been here for centuries and are foundational Americans, and we are supposed to see this as fair. This is ridiculous. Mamdani is a newcomer. As am I. But I don’t ask for any extra consideration because I freely chose to show up and Americans are kindly putting up with me. Such depths of ingratitude and entitlement are painful to observe.

They’re just doing what pays. Liberals have a tremendous psychic need for non-white people to feel oppressed and the natives (even those who might suffer from oppression) aren’t playing along.

It’s another case of immigrants doing a job Americans just won’t — in this case debase themselves to make liberals feel good about themselves.

Well in the liberal world-view brown = victim.

Puerto Ricans can’t have their country but have to move to New York to rumble with the Jets.

Mexicans can’t have their own country but have to pick beans at starvation wages.

Any brown on brown oppression (as in the Arab World and Indian Sub-continent) is blamed on UK colonialism who brought mean behavior to the previous egalitarian rainbow free sex brown peoples… or some other, equally deranged shit like that.

The question is why brown people play along with it. Some probably haven’t thought it through or are willing to get in on a low level scam to get ahead.

    Gross all the way around.

    1. I’ve heard many complaints from my Mexican students about this. They consider themselves white. Republicans could gain a gigantic advantage among Hispanics by adopting a more Hispanic-friendly definition of what white is. The entire “people of color” line of thinking must be rejected.

Many, if not most, of them are. Of European descent, I mean.

It’s just that, historically, Anglos have seen other European immigrants of non-British descent as non-white. Including the Irish, originally.

But you know that already, I’m sure.

    1. It’s the most bizarre view of race where race doesn’t have much to do with actual race and instead is a sort of an award for moral stature.

Race is not really that simple in Latin America, a large majority of Mexicans have mixed European and Native American ancestry. But race is also a question of self-identification and aspiration and many aspire to whiteness as a cultural rather than genetic category. It can be very surreal to be in Mexico and see the difference between the people in the street and the people on TV screens…

        1. “where are the Mexicans?”

A white friend lived a few years in a Latin American city with a pronounced indigenous population and supported herself with private English lessons. One day she got a call for lessons and went to the address (behind a security gate) and customers were very white and she was so uneasy that they never called back…
