Seriously, who else would sacrifice a half hour of their lives to stand there and clap?
First of all, the great thing with children is that, for as long as everybody is living, the concept of “too late” doesn’t apply.
The second important point is that you didn’t damage your children. General bad behavior at these ages means they are trying to get you plugged into them. It’s not the amount of time you spend around then that will work but the intensity of the plug-in. If you have only two hours after work to plug into them, that’s good. It’s much better than spending all day glued to them physically without the plug-in. Put away the device, access the depths of your self and open it up to them. Be massively present in the moment.
If they are acting up in these bad behaviors, it’s a good sign. They want you and your attention. This means you are a good, valuable parent. Children are very smart. They don’t demand attention from a bad parent. A bad parent is dangerous to them and they sit very quietly, trying to attract no attention. All you need to do is learn to open yourself to them in a way that’s enjoyable to you. Your guilt and anxiety don’t help them.
Start small. Do 20 intense minutes of goofing around, ideally doing something physical. Imagine yourself as a power cord that’s connected into an outlet. Channel your attention and energy into them. You’ll know it’s working when you feel that this is really you, your actual deep self is coming out and connecting to them. Don’t manage the symptoms (i.e. specific bad behaviors).
Another good exercise is to imagine yourself as a jug filled with love and attention. Pour the contents into the three little cups that your children are. The cups are bottomless. You’ll never fill them completely. Do as much as you can.

I’m traveling, so I didn’t watch the first day of the RNC. From the snippets I read, I want to hit my head against a wall. I know it was inevitable that Trump would say unnecessary things. The unnecessary things are the price you pay for the good stuff. But the part about giving $5,000 to every American is really unnecessary. It is already impossible to explain to regular people how COVID payouts caused inflation. This is making it worse.
Yes, Biden engaged in the same kind of voter bribery, but so what? It doesn’t mean we need to stoop to the level of Biden. And yes, Trump is a lot more equitable in his voter bribery, promising to reward every American and not specifically his voters, like Biden did. But again, whoop-dee-doo. Even a suggestion of another round of devaluing the dollar gives me a panic attack.

This is the best Freida McFadden I have read so far. It’s even funny in parts. It’s about a female dermatologist cat lady who gets shot in the head and suffers brain damage. There’s an evil husband and a noble, sweet suitor, and even a brave smart kitty named Kitty. There are fascinating descriptions of rehab activities for people with brain damage.
No, really, it reads great. I learned a lot about brain damage. And I promise, I’m not trying to make it sound boring on purpose. This isn’t remotely a boring book.
The novel also has a good overarching idea which is that if you are messed in the head psychologically, that’s worse than having half of your actual brain blown off. The female dermatologist is a ball of neurotic self-esteem issues long before the brain injury. She suffers from the permanently bitten ego that so many women drag around. It’s the exact opposite type of womanhood from mine, and it fascinates me to observe it. I have no idea what makes many women so obsessed with finding imperfections in themselves and organizing their lives around feeling bad about those imperfections.
A very entertaining novel. A perfect book to slide into the autumn.
My university is experiencing record enrollments. We are 50% over last year’s numbers. We are not at the peak enrollment we had in 2011 but that was during a bad recession, and people always go back to school during recessions. We are almost at the 2011 peak. This is happening right as everybody else is losing students because of demographics and a good job market.
Why is this happening?
Last year, my university invited a very talented dude to organize our recruitment. That dude was a brilliant salesman. He got lured away from us after a few months because somebody with his talent will always be sought after. But in the several months he was with us the dude reorganized our entire system, and the results are stunning.
Everybody is complaining and whining, and then one hardworking, talented person comes and bends reality to his will.
