Handbags

This is a Birkin bag that costs $280,000. Notice that you either have to hold the straps in your hand (which makes it impossible to use that hand to hold a cell phone, blog, take pictures, etc. Or, you have to push the straps up and hold the bag in the crook of your elbow, which is also quite uncomfortable. $280,000, people. And maybe something is wrong with my aesthetic perceptions, but I find it quite ugly.

And this is a bag I just bought from an artisan in Florida. It’s hand-made and one of a kind. It also has a chain that allows you to wear it over the shoulder.

This bag costs 7,000 times less than the Birkin you can see on the picture above. In my opinion, it is about 7000 times more beautiful than the crocodile monstrosity.

Will I have to end every one of my posts with the “Why are people stupid” query?

  1. It’s scary to think that the Birkin bag costs enough money to send me to college anywhere I wanted. And it would be worth a lot more than four years–it would be about fourteen years where I’m going now, and over five years at the most expensive college I was looking at.

    1. For me the main thing is that – at that insane price – it is also quite ugly.

It has diamonds and real crocodile, too, which is beyond ridiculous. And it has two dust bags and its own rain coat.

  2. My handbag is an aviator’s helmet bag that I bought in the army ages ago — it might be ugly but it sure is functional, and has been all over the world with me. It’s 16 years old now (bought in 1995) and I’ve used it nearly every day for all those years.

    It looks like this.

Most useful physical object I’ve ever purchased, I think.

    1. Functional first. The rest doesn’t matter. I admire anyone who resists fads to go for usefulness. Bravo!

  3. I need to buy a handbag, since I didn’t find a jacket with good-sized pockets, but not that monstrosity, even if it is named after the celebrity people most often say I look like.
I’d be happiest with something that had a little GPS chip in it, so that if I ever forgot to pick it up, then I could find it quickly.

  4. Handmade bag for $40? That’s an absolute steal. You should be ashamed of yourself for exploiting that poor artisan.
