Tony Robbins and Latin American Identities

I thought I’d seen it all but starting an essay on Latin American identities with a quote from Tony Robbins is definitely a first.

I’m so exhausted that I’m not sure how I feel about this. If anybody is willing to tell me how I should feel about this, I’ll be grateful.

Seriously, people, I’m so overwhelmed with everything I need to do in preparation for my trip to the philosophy conference that I’m now scaring my husband, my sister and my mother by responding to their every suggestion with, “I’d like you to make this decision for me.”

If people have an opinion on what I should wear tomorrow, they should feel free to share.

  1. Had no idea who Tony Robbins was, so googled and looked at his quotes:

A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided.

Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.

I don’t like 2nd quote much, but thought you would agree with it. Do you want to share which quote the student used?

I think you should feel happy because 1) wouldn’t teaching be too predictable without surprises? This way there always is a frisson of what new will spring at you 🙂 2) the student wanted to impress you and probably to share his love of the man with you too 3) it shows some effort, no? I mean, a student intending to do the bare minimum wouldn’t try to prettify the essay

Won’t you wear a pretty dress? I would just open a closet that morning and choose any suitable dress I felt like to wear at the moment.

If you want more advice, I am always ready to help (warning: success not guaranteed) 🙂

    1. This helps already! 🙂

Tony Robbins is a motivational speaker. He influences people with his charisma, not so much with the actual words. But you are right, the student was trying. I was just tired and grumpy.

  2. Yes, my impression of Robbins has always been that he is a superficial huckster, lacking any depth at all. However, I do agree with what he said in the second quote you gave, el. It is just that I have heard this parroted my whole life by so many people.
