Amanda Marcotte is Weird

Everybody loves Amanda Marcotte’s writing but I’m always puzzled by the weirdness of her ideas. See the following, for example:

Instead of bothering childless folks, I say it’s time to start thanking us. Our free time and disposable income supports entire industries that parents get to benefit from. We’re the ones going to shows and sorting through new releases so that you know what new record to download off iTunes this year. We’re the ones who actually go to the movies on a regular basis, keeping your Netflix queue well-stocked. We’re the reason that there’s that new nice restaurant open for your date night. We may roll our eyes and put on a brave smile you can see right through when you send us a baby shower invitation, but you need us.

I’m all for not bothering childless folks, of whom I am one, but where does this bizarre idea come from that people with children don’t go to shows, visit the movies or go to restaurants? Maybe it’s harder to find time for these things when one’s child is tiny but kids have a tendency to grow up. There are crowds of people whose children are too big to prevent them from going to restaurants and watching movies.

I have no idea what Marcotte’s weird outburst is even supposed to be about.

    1. If people read her massively, it means they love her. Negative fandom is in no way different from positive fandom. If somebody reads her every day only to criticize her, that person is a fan.

  1. Even if Marcotte was right that the existence of so much of modern society depended on childless folks she still has to acknowledge that these same childless folk would not themselves exist without some folk having children.

This irrational antagonism some childless folk have for people with children amazes me. Who do they think will be looking after them when they are in old folks homes?

  2. I don’t like Marcotte at all, I don’t like her attitude and her style of writing. She comes off as one of these elitist hipsters from Brooklyn who think that rural people and Christians are evil and stupid, never mind she actually comes from the ass-end of Texas and was actually raised amongst folks like that. She’s the sort of “progressive” who comes from a rural, fly-over place and acts all holier-than-thou as if to say she’s not one of those stupid Southerners, she’s one of the smart, progressive ones who got the hell out of Dodge and has nothing but contempt for these folks. I read a few posts on Daisy’s Dead Air blog about this phenomenon, about how many poor rural people do not trust progressives and liberals and it’s because that many of them come from urban areas and look down on poor rural people, then Fox News and the Republicans pander to them and that’s how they win elections.

      1. Actually, I only know a few words in Russian and can’t read Cyrillic, is that the right spelling in the Latin alphabet? My family is Cuban and I speak English and Spanish with a New Jersey accent 😀
