These characters mistakenly believe that they can free people from the prejudices about gender roles. However, no human being can hope to liberate other human beings from injustice. Only God can do that.

You seem puzzled by behavior that doesn’t especially surprise me.
A Chilean putting more faith in anglo descriptions of a product of her culture (broadly speaking) than those of other members of her culture (or the work itself) makes perfect sense for those Latin Americans who’ve assimilated the idea of the US as the master race…
An African American with a fatalistic attitude towards what can be achieved in the world and kicking human problems upstairs to god also makes sense (I spent several years listening to recorded sermons* in African American churches – I recognize the rhetoric)
*for aesthetic rather than religious reasons

Also God wants us to remain in any kind of gender role we end up with. That is natural and God loves nature.
