College Fund

So we will be starting a college fund. Relatives and friends will be encouraged to contribute to it in lieu of gifts. I don’t think children need a thousand cuddly bears and a million toy cars. We don’t have space for them, anyways. Of course, Sister will be immune from this request because one simply does not get between Sister and her gift-giving.

When the young gentleman turns 18, he will get his college fund. He’ll get it irrespective of whether he chooses to go to college. If he prefers to use the money to start a business, take a trip to Europe, rent an apartment in Paris, or buy a Harley-Davidson, that’s up to him. If he gets a scholarship to college, he can have both college and a Harley-Davidson. (Harley-Davidson here stands for something I don’t get but don’t feel like judging.)

I think it’s a very good, reasonable plan.

  1. A great idea. I am slightly paranoid after what happened in Ukraine in my childhood, so, to be safer in case of economic crisis, does one get a personal adviser in what to invest?

  2. Doesn’t your school pay for your kid to go to college? Mine does. They have a list of about 500 schools that they have a reciprocal relationship with that the kids can choose from (assuming they are accepted — they still have to apply). This is one of the big reasons I don’t quit my job when I am so frustrated. I don’t want my kids to be saddled with the debt burden that I have because my parents contributed zero dollars to my college education.

This is not to say that you shouldn’t save for your kid’s future. Room and board aren’t included in my tuition deal, and I want my kids to live away from home. That can be expensive, but no more than paying for daycare, actually.

      – For now, yes. But the state legislature is promising to take this away. I don’t think the program will be here in 18 years. 😦 😦

  3. Harley Davidson is big in these parts too. I don’t get it myself. If I were into two-wheeled motor vehicles (I’m not), I’d pick one of those cute Vespa scooters, like this one.
