Great News

Did you know that Pet Shop Boys are releasing a new album? This is great news.

I have to say that I’m one of those people who are sorry that the CD format is dead. Music bought from online stores and kept in some cloud somewhere doesn’t seem real. Strangely, I don’t feel the same way about digital books.

  1. I’ve seen people feel the same way about LPs and other kinds of old records like the 45 RPM and 78 RPM records. There’s something about the sound of a record needle that makes listening to music from that era seem more authentic, but good audio restoration can also really make a huge difference.

  2. Ironically, I feel just the opposite. To me, digital books seem completely fake, whereas digital music is completely tangible. I think for me, the reason is that if I want, I can burn a CD of digital music. It’s perfectly legal and within my rights as the person who bought the album, to burn myself a physical CD if I want to. With digital books, it really is in the cloud. I can’t even *print* it out.

  3. My biggest issue with online music is the lack of album notes. If the artist has something to say about the music, I want to know what it is.

  4. Ideally I like the physical object for both, but I can deal with non-physical music better than non-physical books… I love paper and don’t like reading long things on screens.

  5. I happen to be the opposite. Real books have a special meaning for me I’ll never get with digital. I buy digital but those books will never me as meaningful as those I read in real book format.

Music on the other hand I will enjoy independent of its source. Currently I use Spotify, so I can find almost all the music I ever loved, it’s pretty addicting.
