I understand that this is a joke but it’s not a funny one. Especially, since I just had to explain to a cashier that a cucumber and an acorn squash are not the same thing. If you’ve ever seen both, you’d know why this isn’t funny either.

Are you sure her mother’s tongue is English? If yes, she has probably grown up in a food desert. After such childhood even working as a cashier may not help. 😦 Remember the video, in which school children didn’t know what a tomatoe is?

Everybody is an English-speaker in this area. We don’t get many immigrants other than college profs.

I don’t know what an acorn squash is called in Russian. Do you? Obviously I had never seen it before emigrating.
