Acting in Breaking Bad

One problem with the show is that the actor playing Walt is so weak. Even for an American actor, he is really below par.

Other actors in the show are not bad at all. The actor playing Jesse is obviously channeling Eminem but it works for him. The actor playing Hank actually manages to look like a professional actor, which is very rare in the US. The actress playing Skylar is quite good.

But this Bryan Cranston or whatever, God, is he not made for the acting profession, or what? If he got an Emmy, that was only because he had a recognizable face. His acting is just bad. The image of a bumbling, inept, loserish sort of fellow who tries to escape from that identity has been explored to death in movies and theater. Cranston can’t even repeat what was done before him in this area. Seriously, a cat could act better. He takes every scene as if it existed in a vacuum, completely separate from anything that came before.

      1. I agree with this. But the Breaking Bad actor isn’t handsome at all. Or not to me anyway. I have never seen the show but many people rave about his acting. I wonder what people find appealing about him? (Since I don’t think it can be looks?)

        1. When I say they are hired on appearance, this doesn’t mean they have to be beautiful. The actors are hired based on whether their appearance fits in with the part. This actor does look like a bumbling, inept, mediocre middle-aged fellow. As for acting, I see none in his case. he plays each scene as if it existed separately from everything that came before and will come after. The plot implies character development, at least to a point but there is none that he can perform.

      2. I saw this French movie last night. These were the happiest days of these French people’s lives, having an open relationship together. Ah, but then things change and that is not possible anymore.

Years ago I watched a bunch of episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, a sitcom where Cranston played the dad. From what I remember, I liked the show’s quirky humor, and the fact that it had no laugh track and that the middle-aged parents actually had a sexual, loving relationship, which you usually don’t see in these shows… but anyway, the dad was lovable and kind at heart, but also bumbling and inept; and given that it’s a sitcom, there was no character development for him. Cranston was good in that part. I’ve never seen Breaking Bad, but people have marveled at how completely he transformed from his Malcolm in the Middle character… but maybe he hasn’t? (except for dropping the kindness)

    1. I only watched Malcolm in the Middle in a very perfunctory way, so I don’t remember Cranston in it but bumbling and inept is exactly how he is in this show, too, so I don’t know where people see acting.
