I’d be less worried about fires and more worried about flooding. One thing you should check on is if you’d need flood insurance to live there. I can’t tell from the picture, but maybe the house is up far enough on a hill, away from the creek, that flooding wouldn’t be a big hazard.
We’ve had flash flooding in the area this week but the creek came nowhere near the house. And this is after a very snowy winter. I can’t say I’m worried about flooding.
The good thing is that we’ve had 3 days of heavy rains and tornadoes, after which I photographed the creek. Usually it’s much smaller than what you see on the photos. It has swollen significantly after the rains.
Ask the neighbors if there have been bigger floods. Also, is there a smell? If not, all is good.
No hedgehogs here. Porcupines, yes, but they are MUCH bigger than hedgehogs. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porcupine Raccoons are more common, and they are pretty clever about getting into outside trash cans. We put our cans in a combination lock shed, otherwise my brother, whose bedroom was above the shed, would get no peace (those were the days of galvanized trash cans).
It looks very nice. I presume there is not potential for fires?

I’m worried about something undefined and scary.

I love this setting! My only question is what is the flood danger so near a small creek; how much will flood insurance cost there?
