Patriotism

Russians and Ukrainians are too different, my friends.

“Your socks are mismatched,” N just commented.

“Mismatched?” I bellowed. “Have some respect for the noble colors of the Ukrainian flag!!!”

“But what’s the point,” he persisted, “if nobody sees them anyway?”

“I know I have them on,” I explained. “And that’s enough.”

  1. Allt fรถr Sverige!

Yes, I know, it’s convenient Ukraine uses the same colours as Sweden — very, very convenient …

Before you laugh this away, consider the benefits of joining Sweden: responsible health care, a competent military that preseves neutrality, strong engineering and science capabilities, state-funded education through doctoral levels if desired, a strong currency and economy, and most importantly, a neighbour to the east of Sweden who dislikes Russian military aggression even more … and they also have their own Swedes!

After all, this really is the logical thing to do. ๐Ÿ™‚

(April is Modest Proposal Month, after all.)

    1. A competent military indeed! In the fields of education and military defence, I don’t think you have been following developments during later years. Anyway, you’re right about the colours of the flag!

    2. When Khmelnitsky was considering who to sign a military alliance with (back in 1665), Swedes were one of the options. But that shlemazl just had to go and sign the treaty with the Russians. And now we are all in deep shit.

      1. In old times, back in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Sweden was an important military power. Charles XII (1682-1718) had the cossack leader Mazepa as his ally. But in the long run, he was defeated. Those were the days of Swedish glory in the battlefield – sometimes. Voltaire wrote his “Histoire de Charles XII”.
In modern times we have stopped being a warrior nation; we recently celebrated 200 years of peace. Only modern politicians, like Olof Palme and Carl Bildt, seem to want to teach other nations a lesson.

      2. Was Khmelnitsky a predecessor of Mazepa then? Never heard of this guy. Charles XII and Mazepa were allies. But it didn’t turn out well in the end, and it meant the end of Sweden as a military great power. Sweden was an important power in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, you know. Voltaire wrote his “Histoire de Charles XII”.

And now it’s completely different – we have celebrated 200 years without any wars. Only our modern politicians like Olof Palme and Carl Bildt sometimes sound as if they want to teach foreign nations a lesson.

        1. Khmelnitsky was the loser who got us all into the whole sorry mess by signing a military alliance with the Russians. It was in 1665. Since then, Russia believes it owns Ukraine.

  3. Wanted to share this weird story, which probably shows something about parts of Israeli society (humanities in Israeli academia, which are seen as Left). Btw, this Israeli user wrote elsewhere that words Left / Right in Israel are connected to the Palestinian conflict alone, not to economics.
