St. Louis Is Burning

I had no idea that riots are taking place in St. Louis. This is how segregation works: the black area is like a different world. Seeing a white suburb and a black township next to each other is devastating because it’s like they are from different planets.

People ask why I’m in favor of affirmative action and reparations. I’m in favor of absolutely anything that has even the slightest chance to change the current racial situation in the United States because it is absolutely, completely, totally horrible and shameful to witness.

Come on, folks, you can’t really believe that something like this is OK.

  1. It’s just so common for police to kill black people for simply being black. The headlines astonish me.

Black kid shot by police for ‘moving in a dangerous manner’.
Black kid shot by police for holding toy gun (in a state where open carry is legal, where white people proudly carry their rifles to Target and Starbucks.

Contrast the police’s behavior in this situation to what happened with Cliven Bundy’s militia earlier this year. Those people had their guns trained on Federal agents. No problem.

    1. And it isn’t just the shootings either. I’ve been to East St Louis and I’m horrified. I’m from Ukraine, a third-world country, but I never saw this kind of poverty there. And to have the division between the horrible, unspeakable poverty and incredible riches just next door fall so strictly along racial lines is absolutely shameful. I don’t understand how anybody can see this and not want to do anything, just anything to make this stop.

      1. Oh, I bet. The funny thing is the coastal liberals calling middle america backward racists when New York City, the bastion of liberalism, has the most segregated schools in the country. Billionaires on the upper west side living right next to the poor people in Harlem.

Because they’ve benefited from generations of this and continue to do so. Because it’s not them. Because if there wasn’t horrible poverty, how virtuous would they feel about being middle class or rich & doing the “right things” or having their ancestors do such things? Because anything else is “communism”. They want the wealth; they do not want the guilt, and they certainly don’t want to do anything about it. Because acknowledging this in a tangible way, reparations or not, would destroy their wealth and their self concept. You couldn’t even begin to pay the compounded interest of generations of theft. Pick a reason, any reason.

Holding judgement is entirely proper….as the facts continue to unfold.
After the Police were so horribly maligned for trying to hold the peace….unfortunately upon their withdrawal even more violence and looting, appeared again, last night.
It must be very scary for the hundreds of good citizens living in that town.
Sadly,it looks like the only choice to provide a margin of safety for the Blacks & Whites of Ferguson will be to inact Marshal Law and enforced curfews along with a firm National Guard deployment.
Let us all hope for resolve and justice!

he said “we were minding our own business, walking down the MIDDLE of the street,
the cop stopped alongside and told us to walk on the sidewalk”…they refused….then the situation got worse.I guess it’s easy to get in trouble, when you first begin breaking the law, and start mouthing off with authority!
I’ve travelled, a bit…behind the Iron Curtain, Muslim countries, Japan, all over Europe….
I’ve lived in Canada and Honduras…yet, I never saw the divide that exists now in America.
Many Blacks in my neighbourhood choose to avoid the sidewalks altogether and walk down the middle of the road…I guess it’s a way for them to defy the rules…and agravate the folks who abide by them!
As far as reparations… I don’t think the Blacks could or will ever repay the cost and damages created in American society and in places like Detroit, Newark, Chicago, Cleveland….Riots, looting, murders, vandalism, black on black crime, continue to keep investors away.
Racism is a two way street…..truth be told, America is doomed unless we can change the way we look at things…..to See the peace one has to Be the peace!

When I walk in bizarre places, in the middle of the street, not noticing anything around me, all I get from police officers is smiles, courtesy, and wishes to have a great day. I tend to do that quite often, so I have experience in this area. I also tend to jaywalk a lot, which is a bad habit I learned in Montreal. But for some mysterious reason, when I do it, everybody sees it as cute. I wonder why that is.

As to looking Jewish, come on, what does it even mean? None of my Jewish colleagues is visibly identifiable as such. President Obama does not say this woman could have been his mother.

White woman in N.J. watches cartoons with her two small kids in her house. Two black men get in through the open window, beat her viciously, trash one room, beat her again, keep repeating this over and over. Finally, they think she’s dead, throw her body off the stairs and leave. The woman is in coma. After getting caught, they say that they just wanted to rub the house but then got so mad with this woman because she is rich.

      – All of these criminals are going to jail. The anger against the killers of Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin is inspired by the fact that they will not go to jail. It’s not the murder per se that makes everybody so enraged. Murder exists everywhere, it’s a horrible crime that, tragically, does exist. Rioting or protesting against the existence of crime would be a bizarre thing to do. We all know this. But what angers people right now is that some murderers never get punished.

We’re not focusing here on *individual* racism here. It is very different from *institutional* racism. A black man ranting about white people in his living room is much, much different than living in a country where the system itself has been rigged against you from birth.

Racism = bigotry + power. White racism just happens to have the power of institutions (police, banking, corporate, you name it) behind it.

If I’m racist to you, all I can do is hurt your feelings. If you’re racist to me, you can prevent me from getting a job, a home loan, stop and frisk me if I’m walking down the street, beat me up for not showing my ID, put bullets in my head if I try to reach for my wallet, pass laws that prevent people like me from voting, etc.

That’s the difference between black racism and white racism, which, surprise surprise, racists never get. Which is why we see Alexandra crying ‘NOT FAIR’ when President Obama REFUSES (:D) to not hold a 2 hour press conference every time there’s a black person killing a white person.

The better, more helpful idea could be development of black areas and help to black people: creating more opportunities for them – may be, special loans to get education or start a small business, positive discrimination in educational institutions, attempting to lower the % of blacks in jails (not arresting a black person, when a white one would go free, most likely).

      – It would be better to forget expressions like “half white” altogether because, surely, we are more evolved than this.

“The headline was: “Simpson Walks Free” from double murder.
Was it true that the whites were afraid to protest the injustice of a slain White women and a slain White man, finding no justice, is that where it all started?”

      – Yes, that was a travesty. Just like Trayvon Martin’s trial was a travesty.

‘ left here in the mid 60’s, there was full employment”

      – Seriously??? All women worked?? Wow. I mean, I wasn’t there, so I wouldn’t know but are you entirely sure? Full employment of women? What an interesting city that was.

I feel your pain. Did you hear that President Obama is personally escorting a ebola-ridden brown Muslim child across the border to take your place? When will this madness end? 😦 Thanks OBOLA!

Stringer Bell, what part of the country you’re living in, and how long have you been here? And again, being an American, hating all those racists here, how do you help make things better in India where some of your family still lives?
How did you vote in 2008 and 2012?

    – Yes, that was a travesty. Just like Trayvon Martin’s trial was a travesty.

Clarissa, O.J. Simpson abused his wife for many years, beat her in private and in front of others, threw her out of the car, threatened to kill her, threatened to cut of her throat and the throat of any guy who will be her lover. She was telling people that he will kill her and will get away with murder by using his fame and popularity.
He ended up doing just what he promised and he did get away.
    It was a planned murder.
Zimmerman didn’t beat Martin for years, didn’t promise to cut his or anyone else’s throat or do any other harm. It was a manslaughter.
I don’t know how people don’t see the difference.

    1. Victims are dead in both cases and the murderers roam free in both cases, as well. The only difference is that one of the victims chose to have a relationship with her eventual murderer and the other one didn’t. To me, this is a very minor difference when contrasted with the similarities.

  18. Stringer Bell, you’re a troll. You called me an idiot, suggested something that looks like an open grave as my new internet home, refused to answer any of my questions.
You are so secretive about yourself, so careful not to let people know anything about you. What are you so afraid of?

Digging a hole. Does that ring a bell, you utter imbecile?

See, this is why I don’t wish to engage with you. You are an idiot, and the sooner you realize this the better. Is english your first language? You seem to have a very tenuous grasp of it and I feel embarrassed for you. You ask these fox news type race baiting questions like “why didn’t Obama say something when that black man murdered a white person” which suggests you’re very dim. We’ve explained to you, if you read carefully, why such arguments are ill-informed. This is very basic stuff, man.

It is not my responsibility to teach you. Crack open a few books, read some history, basically *anything* other than Drudge or Rush Limbaugh or fox news or freerepublic, and then perhaps we can have a discussion. But you’ll have to do the work. I’m not going to do it for you.

Until then, you’ll just have to deal with intelligent people laughing at your stoopid little racist ass. If being called a racist hurts your feelings i suggest you stop being one.

      1. LOL, I was there. About a third of working class women typically went back to work as the children grew older. Most middle class women did not, although I had aunt that worked part time as a teacher and a nurse. Many professionals were spinsters. Most upper class had hired at least some help. I guess it depended upon your class.

Stringer Bell, you’re a black racist, a complete idiot, sexist pig, you hate women so much cause your Mama was on crack/cocaine while pregnant. You came here to my country, you hate it so much, get the hell out back to India or any other place where they’ll take trash like you.

Stringer Bell might be a native speaker but I’m not. Are we all still aware of this fact?
I haven’t had a chance to read the whole discussion yet but I will later on

Jules observation of Stringer Bell: “You are more articulate than first perceived…night school English classes might be paying off, aferall.”

Seriously, Clarissa…did you overlook the LOL at the ending of my response.?

Stringer Bell loves to make insults towards your readers and you admitted that you liked that, remember ?

The questions do not require an answer because the thread is long as it is.
