I wonder if the time will come when I will be able to fill the tank of my car without dousing myself with gasoline from head to foot. Of course, this is a very fuel-efficient car, so I’ve only had to fill it 3 times since I started driving on June 1.

What are you doing that you manage that? Or how is your gas tank hatch designed that you do that?

It happens either when I remove the nozzle or whatever it’s called from the dispensing machine or from my gas tank.

If it’s the same gas station you go to, please tell the attendant so they can tell the gas company or owner to fix the nozzles because it’s a fire hazard to everyone. There are a surprising amount of people who smoke while they’re filling their tank.

Actually, it is the same pump at the same station. But it never occurred to me that might be the cause of the problem. I was blaming my own ineptitude. Interesting!
Yes, I always drive right by when I see somebody smoking at a gas station because I’d be too nervous to park next to them. Freaks, total freaks.

Maybe go with N or a trusted friend who’s used to filling up their car and have them watch you carefully. If the pump were faulty I’d assume other customers would complain. You might be inadvertently pressing something when you shouldn’t.

Smoking at a petrol station??!!! Pretty sure in the UK staff would throw the switch to stop all pumps working on seeing that, at our local one they’ll shout at you over the tannoy and refuse to switch on your pump if you’re using a mobile phone!
