  1. Disgusting. I feel like there has to be some way where this is illegal. This is in the same category as for profit “universities.” Making a mockery of higher education.

      1. I get them too. More so when my title was still “Assistant Professor.” I think that they massively target people who are Assistant Professors and desperate for publications.

        1. I don’t think it does but I will need to check. My work email is on the university website, so that’s clear. But they also write to my personal Gmail.

      2. I assume that they maintain a database of all faculty and recipients of advanced degrees from accredited universities, together with their university e-mails. I have been receiving several “solicitations for papers” each week since I got my Master’s Degree.

  2. There are American “literary” agencies that promise to publish your poetry for a fee as well — along with all the other aspiring housewife poets. And those who offer to “mechanically edit” your book — which would be fine if they showed some literary flair or even comprehension of your book. But imagine if all the sentences were transformed into somebody’s idea of a grammatically correct form. Perhaps words could also be looked up and replaced with other words more known by everybody. I imagine that would produce a product suitable for American housewives. But not literature. Sometimes a word that the subconscious throws in, which is a malapropism, actually turns out to be an even better word than the one originally intended. I pondered long and hard and left such a word in one of my books — because it really does do the job ten times better than a more conventional word I may have had a mind.

Retain control, use skill rather than mechanics, and always watch out who you are dealing with.

  3. Were there always little white dots falling from the banner of your site?

If so, I respectfully demand that someone put together a version of Asteroids for those little white dots. 🙂
