“I hate going to the accountant!” N exclaims. “I hate it when people rummage in my intimate stuff!”
“I’m sorry,” I said. “But I’ve been going to a gynecologist for the past 20 years. It’s hard for me to share the outrage.”

Are your investments, businesses, etc. so complex that you cannot do your own taxes?

No, I wouldn’t say it’s a complex financial situation. It’s more that we are too afraid of messing it up. As immigrants, we have an uneasy relationship with governmental agencies. Maybe one day this will all feel less scary.

It is easy, just a picky job. But by the time you gather all this stuff up to go to the accountant, you have done most of it. What Americans do not understand is that if you mess up your taxes, you don’t go to jail or something — you get a letter saying they think you have messed it up, or that they disagree. Then you respond, argue, whatever. 😉

[sigh] Here I was, hoping that you were sailing aboard the Crimson Permanent Assurance, chartering an accountant or two whilst making your way through the financial giants with the brash steel of a pirate crew of financial plunderers …

OH, BUT IT’S SIXTEEN MINUTES LONG …
Oh, but Terry Gilliam created this. 🙂

An interesting insight is that people can’t actually see the intimate stuff. They are seeing something else instead. They actually never can be close to you.
