Sumo Mandarins

Because they look like sumo fighters.

Delicious, by the way.

  1. This seems as appropriate a place as any (surrounding posts are a bit grim).

Quick couple things on my trip to Fuerteventura

One of the travel agency local representatives was a Russian speaker (judging from her accent in Polish). The person I was travelling with thought the accent was more Ukrainian than Russian proper but there’s no way I could tell.
I went to the Unamuno house (I hadn’t realized he’d lived there).

He was only there for four months but you’d think it was his second home from the deal they make over him. The lady on duty was surprised to have a foreign visitor who could (sort of) speak Spanish and showed us around the few rooms (her very, very, very thick Canaries accent wasn’t easy to follow for my out of practice ears). I was disappointed there was no gift shop as I thought I might pick up a book or two. She gave directions on where there was a store but I didn’t make it there.

Watched a lot of Spanish tv (with Spanish subtitles which made things easier). I used to have a bunch of Spanish channels on my cable line up but they disappeared and now I have Russia Today en espanol (no gracias), a religious channel and Telesur (and Cat3 in Catalan but it comes and goes unpredictably).

Anyhoo tons of talk about corruption and corrupt politicians on the Falciani list (which the Spanish press is curiously uninterested in). There was some talk about the leader(s) of Podemos and the size of their bank accounts as well but I didn’t have the context to make much of the discussions.

Watched the first part of the contest to pick the reina de carnaval for Tenerife. It took me a while to realize they weren’t sitting on mechanized floats but were dragging their giant fantasias around the stage. One of the weirder things I’ve ever seen on Tv.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnADl2QBpAg (contestants start at around 33.30)

I thought the fourth was the best but the next to last was the winner (booo!)

    1. They do feel a little abandoned and left out of things, so a short stay by Unamuno is cultivated like the event of the preceding century. It’s really cute. 🙂

  2. Actually, I’ve found the best American citrus development was the “Meyer lemon” …

Brew a large cup (or small soup tureen) of Assam tea and place two or three half-centimetre slices of Meyer lemon in the tea to infuse for a while — the resulting beverage is worth the wait. (I like mine with a considerable amount of Demerara sugar.)

I believe they’re now mostly grown in Texas, so it’s understandable if you don’t see them very often in “So Ill” …

(I shall now call your region “So Ill” because your state’s governor is making it sick, BTW … 🙂 )
