Concordia librarians to help Muslim students cull ‘inappropriate’ books

Montréal ‘ s Concordia University is often a weird place. And not in a good, heart-warming way.

  1. Do you think the books should’ve been left there? After reading about the Westminster University, I already don’t know what to say. Anyway, the MSA was the one to make the decision to remove the books.

    1. I believe that everything with the words “Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, etc” should be kicked off campus immediately. Want to be religious? Go to a synagogue, church, mosque, whatever. But there is zero need for this on campus.

So I would remove the MSA altogether because its existence on school grounds is offensive to me.

      1. I think “Muslim” in “the Muslim Students’ Association” may also stand for “(child of) immigrant from a Muslim country,” describing several ethnic/cultural groups. Some people in the MSA may not even be religious, quite similar to the way some Jews aren’t religious. I have always thought that American Jewish Students’ organizations didn’t require their members to be religious. I suppose, you wouldn’t be against organizations for African-American students, which also are for a particular ethnic-cultural group.

Yes, I know. “Jewish” may also stand for nationality, while “Muslim” – not. The relevant question is whom those Muslim students’ orgs serve in practice. Are those only religious people?

        1. I’d just rather they all went to class. Concordia is not known for extremely high educational standards, to put it mildly. Social life should happen elsewhere. Because right now, between clubs, religious associations, athletics, frats, etc, nobody is studying all that much.

I lived next door to this campus for 5 years and can tell you that these students definitely need to loiter less and study more.

  2. WTF, why is this shit happening on any college? If books offend them, I’ll offer to take them to see Slipknot and Korn tour and then a strip club afterwards. That is going to make their heads erode, same with the Jesus Freaks. To quote Bon Scott, Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be 😁

  3. “Reports this week that Mosul’s central library has been ransacked by Isis and 100,000 books and manuscripts burned has cast an international spotlight on a new wave of destruction that has been raging through the northern Iraqi city since last summer.

Earlier this month the head of the UN’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) voiced alarm over “one of the most devastating acts of destruction of library collections in human history.” Director general Irina Bokova said the destruction involved museums, libraries and universities across Mosul.”
