Trans-Pacific Trade Deal

So how does everybody feel about the
Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Deal?

Do we try to retain the nation-state to some degree or do we kick it right in the shins?

Fascinating stuff.

  1. It’s deceitful at several levels. I first ran into it when exploring privacy laws in Latin America. The Pact at that time included language that would override local laws on privacy, which was/is horrific. Ultimately, I don’t think the trade agreement is going to go anywhere. China wants to replace the dollar with the yuan as the primary unit of international currency and I suspect that will be a major hurdle to any agreement.

    1. There’s a draft from last year that includes some very scary ideas about how intellectual property will be dealt with over the internet. I don’t know if that’s the version you saw, but it still overrides local privacy laws and heightens restrictions in the US. It seems very much along the lines of 1984.

After reading the article, I still am not 100% sure whether the trade deal is supposed to do the former or the latter. How do you see it?

    1. From what I’ve read so far, I think it’s an attempt to kick the nation state in the face by expanding the virtual borders of the US (thus actually retaining it). My view is biased by my opinion on the proposed Intellectual Property chapter, though.

Exactly. This trade deal will dilute the nation-state model even more. But as you say, it’s probable that this is all being done to control the dissolution and retain some of the model in a controlled fashion.
