Merkel and the Refugees

One of the biggest battles during the negotiations between Merkel, Hollande, Poroshenko, and Putin yesterday was whether the 1,000,000 refugees from the occupied territories of Ukraine’s Donbass region will have the right to vote in the upcoming Ukrainian elections.

Ukraine’s president Poroshenko refused to consider the proposal by Putin, Merkel and Hollande that these 1,000,000 refugees be denied the right to vote in their own country (where they do and always did reside) to please Putin. Obviously, Putin is aware that the refugees who were displaced by his invasion are not too likely to vote for his puppet representatives. Just as obviously, Merkel is deeply indifferent to refugees if she can’t use them for a photo op.

It seems like, after all, the refugees will not be stripped of their basic civil right and will get a chance to vote.

  1. I thought those 1,000,000 refugees were in Russia?
If so, are you sure they won’t vote for Putin’s puppet representatives?

      • No, almost nobody went to Russia. I think the number is under 30,000 refugees ended up in Russia. It’s the same number as those who ended up in Germany, by the way. The rest – a million people – are in other regions of Ukraine. My own relatives from Donbass, for instance, went to Odessa and Kharkiv. These are all people who want to go back home to the Donbass. They have their apartments, their property, everything back there. They are not immigrants, they are refugees from a war zone whose goal is to go home once the war is over.

Wait, if those refugees are in Ukraine currently, how could the question of not letting them vote arise at all?

    1. This is how things are at this moment. Poroshenko can’t do anything in his own country unless Merkel and Hollande approve. And Merkel and Hollande are not approving anything unless Putin likes it.

That’s how this entire peace process has been. And that’s why I say Poroshenko deserves the Nobel because dealing with this kind of insane constraints and still winning the war and not antagonizing Merkel, Hollande and Obama is an extraordinary feat.

  3. Multiculturalism works!

German real estate agent told not to deal with “asylum seekers” because she looked men in the eye. She was told to leave and send a man instead….

When she complained about it she gets deaththreats and is called a “Nazi slut” by … Germans.

Merkel’s folly is not only daft economically and sociall, but will probably bring about huge contractions of womens rights (in the practical everyday sense) in Europe.
